Nordhouse, William

William Nordhouse ( born William D. Nordhaus ; born May 31, 1941 , Albuquerque , New Mexico ) is an American economist . Member of the US National Academy of Sciences (2001) [2] . The winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics “for the integration of innovation and climate into the economy of growth” (together with Paul Romer ), in part “for the integration of climate change in the long-term macroeconomic analysis” [3] .

Biography

Born in 1941 in Albuquerque in a wealthy family. His father Robert Nordhaus (1909-2007), a graduate of Yale University , a lawyer and co-founder of the Sandia ridge funicular [4] , was the son of Jewish immigrants from Germany [5] who moved to the Santa Fe trail area in the 19th century [6] . His mother, Virginia Nordhouse (née Riggs, 1911–1991), originally from the Bronxville ( New York State ), worked in a Sandy-based ski resort [4] .

Bachelor ( 1963 ) of Yale University ; Ph.D. ( 1967 ) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Since 1967 he has been teaching at Yale (professor since 1973 ). He is a co-author of P. Samuelson in later editions (starting from the 12th edition, 1985) of the textbook Economics: An Introductory Analysis .

In 1977-1979, member of the Council of Economic Advisers to the President of the United States, Jimmy Carter .

In July 1990, he participated in a seminar in Sopron (Hungary), conducted by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and played an important role in developing a plan for Russian reforms. In discussing price liberalization, he criticized the parallel existence of solid and free prices and proposed a D-day plan, where D is the day of price liberalization. The program was to prepare for this day and then to manage the consequences. From the Soviet side, P. Aven, E. Gaidar, A. Chubais, A. Shokhin, E. Yasin and others took part in the seminar [7]

In 2014–2015, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston .

Honorary Member of the American Economic Association (2004), President of the Association (2014).

On October 8, 2018, William Nordhouse was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics “for integrating climate change into a long-term macroeconomic analysis” [8] [9] .
