Life and work
G. La Tange was educated at Dulwich College, where he met Stanhope Forbes and Frederick Goodall . Then he studied at the Lwmber School of the Arts and, since 1874, at the Royal Academy of Arts ( KAH ) school. In December 1879, La Tange was awarded the KAH gold medal and a scholarship to study at the Paris School of Fine Arts . In addition, he receives a letter of recommendation from KAHF President F. Leighton to J.-L. Jerome , from whom La Tange then studies for 3 years.
In this period of Paris, the artist falls under the influence of paintings by French naturalists and J. Whistler . He spends the summer months of 1881 and 1882 on sketches on the coast of Brittany , along with many other artists, including Jules Bastien-Lepage . In the summer of 1883, La Tange travels to the Rhone Valley. The artist created the paintings during this period at the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Royal Society of Oil Artists .
In 1886, La Tange returned to London. In the same year, he participated in the first exhibition of the New English Art Club and took part in the debate about what policies the new club should pursue. In the late 1880s, the artist lives in Norfolk , where he paints mainly rural landscapes. In 1891, an exhibition of his works at the KAH opens. At this time, La Tange falls under the influence of the creativity of the group of artists of the Newlin School . The basis of its subjects are large-format realistic genre compositions. In 1896 , about the invitation of J. Whistler , president of the International Society of Artists, Sculptors and Graphics , an exhibition of La Tange paintings was held in the gallery of the society. At the beginning of the XX century, the master shows an increasing interest in impressionism . He visits Provence and Liguria , where he draws a lot. Before the start of World War I , a large exhibition of La Tanges paintings made in Southern Europe, which was a great success, opens in Leicester . After the war, in the 1920s, the artist again lives in Liguria and Spain for a long time, writes southern landscapes and genre scenes.
