Sazae-san ( Japanese サ ザ エ さ ん Sadzae-san ) is a comedic manga - " yonkoma ", created by Matiko Hasegawa . The main character of the work is the housewife Sadzae Isono, who lives the traditional family life of a Japanese woman and daily faces difficulties and trials [1] . The first chapter was published in April 1946 in the Japanese newspaper Fukunichi Shimbun ( フ ク ニ チ 新聞 Fukunichi Shimbun ) .

Then, Hasegawa was invited to Asahi Shimbun , so in 1949 the author moved to Tokyo and began to draw manga in this city, moving the scene of her work there. The manga described the events taking place in modern Tokyo. It was printed right up to Hasegawa's retirement in 1974, becoming one of the longest running and oldest Japanese comics. Awarded the Bungeishunju Publishing Award . This is the first popular manga drawn by a woman. [2] According to a 2007 survey by the , it ranks 34th among the best manga of all time. [3]
Separate volumes of Sazae-san were published by Shimaisha Publishing House ( Japanese 姉妹, ) , which Hasegawa founded with his sister. After the company closed in April 1993, the manga also disappeared from print, but in the same year, Asahi Shimbun acquired the rights to publish. Separate volumes were published in the USA by the American division of Kodansha .
