Bitterns [1] ( lat. Botaurus ), also large , or real bitterns, are a genus of birds of the family of heron order Ciconiiformes .

Bitterns live in swamps, banks of reservoirs. The loud cries of males in the nesting period resemble the call of bulls ( bel. and Ukrainian bull ), hence the popular name of the genus - bull [2] [3] . Russian bittern (as well as the variant vyp and other Russian- vypl ) is associated with alternating with yelling , yelling .

In the past - the object of hunting. In European cuisine, it has long been believed that the taste of meat resembles hares or rabbits.
