The length of the river is 300 [1] (or 260 [2] ) kilometers, the basin area is 9300 km² [1] . The average water flow rate is 83 m³ / s [1] .
The river originates in Ghana , 40 kilometers west of the city of Sunyani . In Côte d'Ivoire, the river flows from north to south; it flows into the lagoon of Abi Atlantic Ocean . It has a number of tributaries. Near the city of Ayame , two hydroelectric power plants were built on the river - Ayame-I (built in 1959) and Ayame-II (1965), which supply electricity to the city of Abidjan and southeast Cote d'Ivoire.
On the river there is a national park of the same name and a biosphere reserve .
