Bruce, Katherine

Catherine Wolf Bruce ( Eng. Catherine Wolfe Bruce ; January 22, 1816 , Manhattan , New York - March 13, 1900 , New York ) - a famous American philanthropist , patron of astronomy.

Katry Bruce is the daughter of George Bruce, a well-known typeface businessman, and Catherine Wolfe. In 1887, she sponsored $ 50,000 to create a department at the New York Free Library , named after her father ( born George Bruce Branch ). She turned her attention to astronomy as a philanthropist in the 73rd year of life. Between 1889 and 1899, she donated funds from the Harvard College Observatory (USA), the Yerkes Observatory (USA) and the Heidelberg-Königstuhl Observatory (Germany) to buy new telescopes for each of these institutions. In addition, Catherine Bruce subsidized the publication of scientific works, supported talented scientists. For the support of the Heidelberg Observatory, the Grand Duke of Baden awarded her a gold medal [1] .

The Catherine Bruce Medal , the asteroid (323) Bruce , discovered in 1891, and the Bruce Crater on the Moon are named after her.
