Content
Geography
The village of Selmenga is located on the right bank of the Northern Dvina . To the south of the village is the Selmenga River, which flows into the Selmenga Hollow of the Northern Dvina. The village received its name from the Selmenga River. The word "Selkea" in Vepsian means "clear, transparent." A possible interpretation is “pure river” [1] .
History
The village was founded in 1980 with the new timber industry, created by decision of the Ministry of Industry of the USSR , at first it was called the village of Builders .
In 1985, an elementary school opened in the village; in 1991, the Selmengi secondary school was opened. In 1987, the Selmengsky Village Council with an administrative center in the village of Selmenga was allocated from the Topetsky Village Council. In 1989, the village of Shosheltsy of the Nizhnetoyemsky village council of the Verkhnetoyemsky region, which became part of the Selmengsky village council, was included in the Vinogradovsky district. In 1992, the Selmengsky Village Council was renamed the Selmenga Rural Administration, consisting of two settlements: Selmenga and Shosheltsy. In 2006, the Selmengsky rural administration was merged with the Boretsky administration into the Boretskoye municipality.

The population of Selmengi, according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census , was 994 people [5] . In 2009, 1280 people lived in the village, 210 of them were pensioners [6] . In 1992, 1,433 people lived in Selmenga. Selmenga is the third most populated (after Dvinsky Bereznik and Rochegda) settlement of Vinogradovsky district.
