Career

Banton learned keyboards at Wakefield Cathedral while studying at Silcoates School in Yorkshire . He later practiced as a television engineer at the BBC . In May 1968 he became a member of the Van der Graaf Generator . In live performances he played on the Hammond organ and the farfiz organ. In the studio he also played the piano and bass.

In 1975, he began the construction of a commissioned body based on the Hammond model, but similar in sound to the spiritual. This was achieved through the installation of oscillators : the lower notes reached 16 Hz, reproduction was carried out through twenty-four-inch subwoofers .

Banton left the band at the end of 1976. Worked on the design, construction, and installation of power tools at Makin Organs. In 1992 he opened The Organ Workshop (from the English - “organ workshop”).

In 2005, reunited with former Van der Graaf Generator members Peter Hammill and Guy Evans.
