The competition was held in 2006 for the first time in the United States since 1998 and for the second time in Los Angeles, in which it was previously held in 1990. The Republic of Kazakhstan was represented for the first time, and the following countries returned after several years of absence: Saint Lucia (1977), Iceland (1997), Saint Martin (2000), Northern Mariana Islands (2002), Argentina (2003), New Zealand (2003 ), Estonia (2004), Ghana (2004), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (2004), and Sweden (2004). The competition also involved the majority of participants in their history (86), who arrived in Los Angeles.
Natalia Glebova from Canada handed over the crown to the winner Suleika Rivera from Puerto Rico , at the end of the 2-hour show. Her reign was the longest in the entire history of Miss Universe: 1 year and 2 months since she was crowned May 31, 2005 in Bangkok , Thailand .

- Los Angeles accepted the contest for the second time, the previous one was held here in 1990. This is the first time a competition has been held in the United States since 1998 (when the competition was held in Hawaii).
