Gniezno Gate

General form

Gniezna gates - double hinged doors, cast in bronze in the XII century. They are located in the Gneznensky arch cathedral church .

They were created between 1160 and 1180 by order of the Archbishop of Gnezna and present, on eighteen reliefs, scenes from the life of St. Wojciech from Prague, patron of the cathedral.

The history of the gate remains the subject of controversy. It is possible that they were cast in Gniezne by craftsmen from the Meuse , or made in Hildesheim , or in Magdeburg .

They resemble the gate of Magdeburg from Novgorod .

The left flap of 328 × 84 × 1.5 cm is made in one piece, the right one is mounted from 24 separate parts.
