Shiva Subramuniyaswami ( born Shivaya Subramuniyaswami ; birth name is Robert Hansen ; born January 5, 1927 - November 12, 2001 ) is an American Shaivite guru , writer and preacher ; founder and first leader of the Shaiva Siddhanta community. Born and raised in California. At a young age, he traveled to India and Sri Lanka , where he adopted Shaivism , receiving initiation in 1949 from guru Yogaswami from Jaffna [1] . In the 1970s, he founded a Hindu monastery on the island of Kauai and the magazine Hinduism Today . Shiva Subramuniyaswami played a large role in the spread of Shaivism in the West [2] . He is the author of more than 30 books on Hinduism, yoga and meditation .
