In nature , the range of the species covers the Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai . Endemic . Described from Chotkal .
It grows on the dry southern slopes in the forest-steppe belt and in the subalpine zone .
Shrub up to 2.5 m tall, branched. Young twigs are brownish, older gray.
Leaves obovate, oblong or elliptic, up to 6 cm long, obtuse, narrowed to petiole , whole-marginal or slightly serrated along the edge, membranous, grayish-green above, somewhat bluish below. Spines simple or tripartite, up to 15 mm long.
The flowers are up to 1 cm across, in branched paniculate brushes , usually 10β20, rarely more. Pedicels up to 8 mm long. The ovary is oblong, with 1-3 ovules .
Berries are black with a gray raid, oblong-elliptical, up to 1 cm long, not more than 6 mm wide. Seed is usually one.
