Ualyalum

"Ulyalum" in the performance of Dante Gabriel Rosseti . Figure 1847-1848

Ulyalum ( Eng. Ulalume ; also Ulalum ) is a poem written by Edgar Allan Poe in 1847 . Just like some other poems by Edgar Allan Poe (for example, “ Raven ”, “ Annabelle Lee ” and “ Linor ”), “Ulyalyum” describes the loss by the narrator of a beautiful woman who suddenly died.

The work was written at the request of Rev. Cotsworth Bronson, who asked Edgar Allan Poe to compose a poem that he could read in one of his public lectures. However, after Poe sent Ulyalum to Bronson, he decided not to use it in his lecture and sent it back to the author.

Edgar Poe later decided to send him to Sartain's Union Magazine , but the manuscript was rejected there [1] .

As a result, the work was first published in American Review: A Whig Journal , where Poe sent it in December 1847 .

Impact

  • The last lifetime novel of Roger Zhelyazny got its name from one of the lines of the poem: “ Night in the dreary October ” ( English A night in the lonesome October )
  • The same line gave the name to the novel by Richard Laimon ( English Night in the Lonesome October )
