After the end of the Soviet-Finnish war, he continued to command the regiment relocated to the city of Tbilisi . From August to December 1940, he was the commander of the 44th Fighter Aviation Division (in Uman, now Cherkasy Region , Ukraine). In March 1941, he graduated from advanced training courses for commanding officers at the MV Frunze Military Academy . In November 1941 - January 1942, he served as the commander of the 20th Reserve Army (which did not participate in the hostilities).

In January-September 1942 he again commanded the 36th Air Defense Fighter Division, by then transferred to the Ryazh-Tambov Air Defense Division . In September 1942-June 1943 - deputy commander of the 6th Air Defense Fighter Corps ( Moscow Air Defense Front ). In August 1943-June 1944 - again the commander of the 36th Air Defense Fighter Division (transferred to the Oryol Division Air Defense Division ). Being in the near rear, the division under the command of V.V. Zelentsov conducted intense combat work, protecting the rear and communications of the army from attacks by German aircraft . Her pilots during this time completed more than 20,000 sorties, 173 German aircraft were shot down.

Since July 1944 - commander of the 125th Air Defense Fighter Division on the Northern and Western Air Defense Fronts. July 26, 1944 during the bombing of the city of Vilnius (Lithuania) was wounded in the head and shell-shocked. He participated in the Battle of Kursk and the liberation of the Baltic states . Parts under his command covered from the air the cities of Yelets , Tambov , Michurinsk , Lipetsk , Oryol , Bryansk , Unecha , Gomel and Mozyr , the cities of the Baltic states.

During the war, he made 19 sorties on Yak-9 and La-5 fighters for patrolling and reconnaissance of enemy troops.

After the war, he continued to command the 125th Air Defense Fighter Division (in the city of Kaunas , Lithuania). In 1947 he graduated from the Advanced Training Courses for commanders and chiefs of staff of air divisions at the Air Force Academy ( Monino ).
