Duke de Richelieu ( fr. Duc de Richelieu ) - ducal title in the rank of peer of France . The title was created on November 26, 1629 for Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu, who, being a clergyman , did not have any direct male heirs to inherit the title. Instead, the title passed to his great-nephew, Armand Jean de Vigniero , the grandson of his older sister Francoise ( 1577 - 1615 ), who married Rene de Vignero, Senor Poncourlet († 1625 ).

Armand Jean de Vigniero added the name of Cardinal du Plessis to his own, took the emblem of the cardinal ( d'argent à trois chevrons de gueules "sans meslange d'aulcunes autres" ) and received the title of Duke of Richelieu and Peer of France in a letter of patent in 1657 .
Two new reverse transfers of property rights to the heir to the original title holder occurred in 1822 and in 1879 . Arman Emmanuel du Plessis himself, the Duke de Richelieu died without leaving an heir, but he obtained permission to transfer the title of Duke de Richelieu to the son of his half-sister Simplicia, daughter of Antoine-Pierre de La Chapelle de Saint-Jean-de-Jumillac, with the transfer of property rights back to the descendants of his younger brother, if he himself dies without an heir. The point of all of the above is that in reality the title passed to his nephew.
The title faded in 1952 with the son of the 7th Duke de Richelieu and Alice Hein ( 1858 - 1925 ). Alice was widowed in 1880 and remarried to Prince Albert I of Monaco in 1889 .
