Astracia is large , or Astrantia is large ^[2] , or Zvezdovka is large ^[3] ( lat. Astrantia májor ), - a herbaceous plant ; a species of the genus Astrantia of the family Umbrella .

Originally from Europe and West Asia , the plant is used in many countries as a decorative plant in gardens and flower beds. There are many subspecies and varieties of this plant ^[4] .

The Swedish common name for the plant is “daughters of Linnaeus ” ( Swede. Linnés döttrar ) ^[5] .

Botanical Description

Stem up to 1 m tall.

The leaves are palmate-five-dissected.

Flowers in simple umbrellas with star-shaped, whitish-pink leaves of the wrapper . Petals are whitish pink ^[2] .

Fruits and seeds

Economic Significance and Application

All parts, especially rhizomes , have laxative properties. Active substances have been little studied ^[2] .

Decorative plant, breeders have created many garden forms and varieties .

' Alba' - flowers and bracts are greenish-white. Height 60–90 cm. Zones of frost resistance : 5–8 ^[6] .
` Claret` - flowers and bracts ruby red. Height 60–90 cm. Zones of frost resistance: 5–7 ^[7] .
` Gill Richardson` - flowers and bracts are red-brown. Height 60–90 cm. Zones of frost resistance: 4–7 ^[8] .
` Pink Joyce` - flowers and bracts are shiny, bright pink. Flowering in June-August. Height is 60 cm ^[9] .
` Penny's Pink` - flowers and bracts pale pink decorated with veins of a deeper pink color. Height 60–90 cm. Zones of frost resistance: 4–7 ^[10] .
` Purple Joyce` - flowers at the base are greenish, purple at the ends, bracts purple with a purple tint. Flowering in June-August. Height is 60 cm. Frost-resistance zones: 4-8 ^[11] .
' Red Joyce' - red flowers, plant height 45-60 cm, width 30-45 cm. Frost resistance zones: 5–9 ^[12] .
' Roma' - pink flowers, bracts pink and white at the base and pinkish to the ends. Height 30-60 cm. Zones of frost resistance: 4-7 ^[13] .
