General Description

Media Molecule is an English privately held subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment . The company is engaged in the development of computer games. The headquarters is located in Southeast England , in the city of Guildford .

History

Media Molecule was founded in 2006 by former employees of Lionhead Studios : Alex Evans, Mark Healey , Dave Smith and Kareem Ettouney . At that time, they worked on the indie game Rag Doll Kung Fu and realized that they were able to create innovative games themselves - in a small company with a family atmosphere and climate within the team, which led to the founding of the Media Molecule studio [2] .

Developing Relationships with Sony Computer Entertainment

On June 1, 2006, it was reported that Media Molecule had signed an exclusive agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment to create an original and innovative game for the PlayStation 3 console [3] ( Little Big Planet was the game).

On March 2, 2010, Sony Computer Entertainment acquired Media Molecule Studios [4] .

List of developed games

  • Rag Doll Kung Fu (2005, PC , Steam );
  • LittleBigPlanet (2008, PlayStation 3 );
  • LittleBigPlanet 2 (2011, PlayStation 3 );
  • Tearaway (2013, PlayStation Vita );
  • Tearaway: Unfolded (2015, PlayStation 4 ).
  • Dreams (2018, PlayStation 4 )

At the beginning of July 2011 at the GameLab event , studio head Sivon Reddy ( Siobhan Reddy ) said that the studio is moving away from the development of games in the LittleBigPlanet series and will focus on its new ideas [5] . Later, the founders of the studio, the games of the LittleBigPlanet series were compared with a child who grew up and leaves his parents' house [6] . At the end of July 2011, it became known that the next game of the LittleBigPlanet series would be developed by Double Eleven exclusively for the PlayStation Vita console [7] .

During the gamescom 2012 exhibition, the next project announced, which Media Molecule is working on, is the Tearaway game for the PS Vita console [8] . The representative of the studio said that this is not the only project Media Molecule is working on, but there is another one, but it is too early to talk about it, since it is at the very initial stages of development [9] .

In February 2013, on the official site of Media Molecule, in the “Created Games” section, a page appears with the title “?” And Toyah’s video embedded in it onto the track It's A Mystery , hinting at some unknown and mysterious game. The appearance of the page is associated with the PlayStation Meeting event, which is scheduled for February 20, 2013 [10] , and which is expected to present the next Sony PlayStation 4 console [11] [12] .

The first Dreams demo was at the PlayStation Meeting 2013. The official announcement came at E3 2015.
