Aventine Secession (XX century)

Aventine Secession - the withdrawal of the Italian Socialist Party from the Parliament after the assassination of Giacomo Matteotti , named after the split "Aventine Secession" in ancient Rome .

Premise

In 1923, the Acherbo Act replaced proportional representation. This meant that the largest party, which received at least 25% of the vote, gets two thirds of the seats in parliament. After the elections in April 1924, Mussolini won two thirds of the votes, which gave him an absolute majority. After accusations of fascists in the parish government by behind-the-scenes methods, political corruption and intimidation of voters, the socialist leader Giacomo Matteotti was abducted and killed by Amerigo Dumini and other representatives of the fascist party. There is a considerable controversy among historians over the level of participation in this conspiracy of Mussolini and his party.

As a result of a public resonance after the murder, he was forced to dismiss many members of his entourage, including General De Bono , the police chief and the head of the black-shirts . At the end of July 1924, the socialists began to boycott the parliament in order to force the king to dismiss Mussolini.

Result

Voting on the removal of Mussolini without socialists ended in failure. King Victor Emmanuel III feared the growth of violence on the part of the fascist detachments, and thus Mussolini remained as prime minister. Mussolini declared that the socialists lost their seats, and the party was banned in early 1925 . In January 1925, Mussolini declared the dictatorship and began a series of repressive measures aimed at the destruction of the opposition.

Aventine secession only helped Mussolini consolidate power, eliminated parliamentary opposition and deprived the king of any reason for dismissal.
