After the death of his father in 1371, Valeran inherited his possessions, including the family county of Linyi , as well as the inheritance of his mother - the county of Saint-Paul in northern France.
Valeran served the King of France Charles V and was captured by the British. In captivity, he married Maud Holland, the half-sister of King Richard II of England .
In 1396, King Charles VI ordered Valeran to negotiate peace with the British in London, and the following year appointed governor of Genoa .
During the madness of Charles VI, a struggle broke out between the Armagnac and Bourguignon groups at the French court. During this struggle, Valeran became part of the latter, supporting the Duke of Burgundy, Jean the Fearless . In 1402, Valeran served as the great master and caretaker of the royal forests and waters of the French kingdom.
In May 1405, he commanded an army that captured Merck, but already in August the British army, coming up from Calais, forced Valeran to leave the city and retreat. In 1410, Jean the Fearless appointed Valeran the great fighter of France , as well as the governor of Paris .
In 1411, Jean the Fearless established control over Paris. He ousted Charles I d' Albray from France’s post as constable. In his place, Valeran was appointed. He fought against the Armagnacs in Normandy, but after the bourguignons were forced to leave Paris in August 1413 , Valeran retired to his possessions and was removed from the post of the Connable, who again took Charles I d'Albre.
Valeran died in the spring of 1415. His only daughter, Jeanne, who was married to the Duke of Brabant Antoine , died before her father. Therefore, the possession of Valeran was inherited by her second son - Philip of Burgundy .
