- January 4 - Billboard Magazine began publishing music charts .
- On January 28, the newspaper Pravda published an article entitled “ Muddle instead of Music, ” criticizing the work of D. D. Shostakovich .
- May 2 - the premiere of the symphonic tale for children of Sergei Prokofiev " Peter and the Wolf ", created in the spring of 1936.
- The State Academic Russian Choir named after A. V. Sveshnikov and the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia were founded.
