Biography
He was born on October 15, 1921 in the village of Protsikov, Vesyolovsky District, Rostov Region, in a peasant family. Russian
In 1939, after graduating from high school, Ivan Levchenko went on a Komsomol ticket to the Tambov Red Banner Cavalry School. After graduating from it, he was assigned to one of the units, which was stationed in the Far East.
In the army since March 1943 .
Lieutenant I. A. Levchenko distinguished himself in battles in the Sevsky district of the Oryol (now Bryansk) region. On the night of March 20-21, 1943, at the head of a platoon in the rear of the enemy near the village of Streletskaya (now Streletskaya Sloboda), he destroyed many Nazis. In the battle, the platoon was killed, and Ivan Levchenko was seriously wounded and surrounded by fascists. He preferred death to captivity, blowing himself up and surrounding his enemies with a grenade.
From the award sheet:
“On the night of March 20-21, 1943, he participated in a night raid in the Streletskaya area, being wounded and surrounded by an enemy group, he continued to shoot until the last bullet, destroying eight Nazis. Not wanting to fall into the hands of the Germans alive with a hand grenade blew himself up. ”
The commander and chief of staff of the 249th cavalry regiment wrote to his mother:
"Your son, Lieutenant Levchenko Ivan Alekseevich, in the battle for the socialist Motherland, loyal to the Military Oath, showing heroism and courage, died the death of the brave and buried near the village of Streletskaya, Orel Region."
He was buried in the village of Streletskaya Sloboda, Sevsky district, Bryansk region.
Rewards
- For the exemplary performance of the combat missions of the command on the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism shown, by Decree [1] of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 18, 1943, Lieutenant Levchenko Ivan Alekseevich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and Gold Star medals.
