Education
At the age of 18, he left school, resumed his studies at evening school in 1976 . He graduated from Ateneo in Luxembourg.
In October 1981, he received a master's degree in private law from the University of Nancy II .
Career
Since 1967 he worked in the laboratory of the Uniroyal society. During this period, he worked actively in the youth section of the Luxembourg Workers Federation.
In 1968, he worked in the city administration of Luxembourg , in 1969 he returned to Steinfort and took an equal position in the city administration.
In 1976-2004 - Director of the Steinfort Intercommunal Hospital.
From 1982 to 2004 - Mayor of Steinfort.
In 1984-2004 - Member of the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg .
In 1989, he became chairman of the parliamentary group of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers Party.
From 1997 to 2004 - President of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers Party.
In 1999-2004 - Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg.
In 2000 to 2004 - Vice President of the European Socialist Party.
After the elections held on June 13, 2004, he entered the First Government of Juncker-Asselborn. Since July 31, 2004 - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration.
Since July 2004 - Representative of Luxembourg of the Council of Ministers of the European Union for General Affairs and External Relations.
After the June 7, 2009 elections and the resumption of the coalition between the Christian Social People’s Party and the Luxembourg Socialist Workers Party, he retained the post of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs (since July 23, 2009).
