History of the Palace of the Grand Dukes in Luxembourg
The palace was built as the town hall of the city of Luxembourg in 1572–1773, after an explosion in a powder magazine destroyed this quarter of the city in 1554. The town hall building was damaged during the shelling of the city by Vauban in 1683—1684. It was restored in 1728 and expanded 13 years later. After the occupation of Luxembourg by the French in 1795, the building housed the administration of the Foret department.
From 1817, the town hall served as the residence of the governors of Orange dynasty . In 1890, the Grand Duke Adolphe , becoming the first ruler of independent Luxembourg for many years, chose the palace and the governor-general as his residence. Seven years before, the interiors of the palace were restored in connection with the visit of King Willem III and his wife Emma to the city. Under Adolf I, he was completely expelled, and a new wing was built with rooms for the family and guests.
During the German occupation in World War II, the Palace of the Grand Dukes was used by the Nazis as a music hall and tavern. Great damage was inflicted and a lot of palace furniture and collections of paintings were destroyed. With the return of Grand Duchess Charlotte from exile in 1945, the palace again became a representation of the Grand Dukes.
Under the supervision of Charlotte, the palace was decorated in the 1960s. It was completely renovated between 1991 and 1996 . The interior of the palace is constantly updated to meet modern standards of comfort and taste.
From 1945 to 1966, the Guardian of the Grand Duke held the ceremonial guard of the palace. From 1966 to the present day, soldiers of the army of Luxembourg perform these duties.
