Creation History

It was founded as the Vanemuise Selts Society on June 24, 1865, following the idea of Johan Waldemar Jansen . In 1869, with the support of the Vanemuine Society, Tartu hosted the first Estonian song festival under the direction of David Otto Wirhaus . On June 24, 1870, on the fifth anniversary of society, Lydia Koidula ’s play “The Cousin of Saaremaa ” ( Est. Saaremaa Onupoeg ) was presented , marking the beginning of the Estonian National Theater and Vanemuine Theater. From 1878 to 1903, the theater was headed by August Wijra [1] .

Initially, the theater was in a building on Yama Street. This building was destroyed by fire in 1903. The new building, designed by Armas Lindgren , was opened in 1906 on Aija Street (now known as Vanemuise Street ). After the opening of the new building, the theater was headed by Karl Menning and remained its leader until 1914 [2] .

The Little House of Vanemuine

In 1944 , during the Second World War , the building completely burned down. The theater moved to the building of the former German Tartu Theater , which is now part of the Vanemuine Theater and is known as the "Little House". A new building (with a modified design) with a hall for 682 people, now known as the "big house", was built and in 1967 on the old site. The concert hall (842 seats) was opened in 1970. The Little House was destroyed by fire in 1978 and rebuilt in 1991 .

In 1956, the theater was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor . [3]
