Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player ( Windows Media Player , for short WMP ) - a standard player for audio and video files for operating systems of the Windows family. Versions of Windows Media Player were also released for Mac OS , Mac OS X, and Solaris , but the development of those versions has since been discontinued. In addition to Windows Media Player, it includes the ability to copy music from CDs without error correction and offset, burn discs in Audio CD format (also with offset) or as discs with data with playlists, such as MP3 CD, sync media files from digital players or other mobile devices, and allows users to buy music from online music stores. Includes a library of Windows Media Format.

About Product

WMP is manufactured by Microsoft and is bundled free of charge for Windows operating systems. Microsoft also produced free versions of this player for other operating systems, such as Mac OS and Solaris , but they are inferior to the Windows versions in several ways: less functionality, fewer new versions appear, fewer types of media files are supported.

Windows Media Player first appeared in Windows 98 Second Edition . Its predecessor (included with Windows 98 First Edition and Windows 95 ) was Universal Player. The Universal Player lacked some WMP features, such as copying music from a CD to a computer, burning music from a computer to a CD, and the ability to buy music in online stores.

Windows XP came with Windows Media Player 8, but starting with SP2, it preinstalled version of Windows Media Player 9. Versions 9, 10, 11 have a music playback mode from the taskbar . In version 12, this mode is missing. The current version of Windows Media Player is 12, it was released in July 2009 and could be downloaded from the company's website [3] . It was planned for inclusion in the distribution of Windows 7, which went on sale October 22, 2009. This version of the player supports H.264, Xvid, and DivX, AAC, and .mov video.

In March 2004, the European Commission fined Microsoft € 497 million, and also ordered the company to create a version of Windows NT for sale in Europe without Windows Media Player (Windows XP N) [4] . Microsoft has filed an appeal, but for now is releasing a stripped-down version of Windows - Windows XP Reduced Media Edition. You can also install WMP in it, pre-downloading it via the Internet.
