History
The name of the square, like the entire city, is associated with the dam, which was built on the Amstel River in the XIII century. The dam gradually strengthened and, as a result, became wide enough for the emergence of the town square, which later became the center of the city formed around it. Dam Square was formed from two areas - Middeldam and Platse . Gradually, this area became the center of commercial and political life [3] .
Location and Description
The area has an almost rectangular shape with a length of about 200 meters from west to east and about 100 meters from north to south. It connects the streets Damrak and Rokin , which run along the former bed of the Amstel River from the Central Railway Station to the Coin Square and the Coin Tower . To the northeast of it is the Red Light District .
On the western part of the square there is the neoclassical Royal Palace [4] , which served as the city hall from 1655 to 1808, when it was transformed into a royal residence. Next to it is the Gothic New Church of the XV century and Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum . On the opposite side of the square is dominated by the National Monument , a white stone stele, erected in 1956 in memory of the victims of the Second World War. Also on the square overlook the hotel Krasnapolsky and first-class department store Bienkorf. These sights have turned the square into a tourist area.
