Dnieper Delta

The Dnieper Delta ( Dnieper plavnii ) occupies the lower reaches of the river. The Dnieper at its confluence with the Dnieper estuary of the Black Sea . This is the second largest delta of Ukraine, after the Danube Delta . Unlike the latter, the Dnieper delta does not have a pronounced triangular shape [1] .

Hydrography

The Dnieper Delta begins 50 km above the mouth at the branch of the Konka branch. Has a quadrangular outline. Its average width is 10-12 km, sometimes up to 17. From the south it is bordered by Aleshkovsky sands . The area of the Dnieper delta is approximately 350 square meters. km., which includes numerous straits, eriks, lakes and ponds, quiet backwaters, wetlands, branches, tributaries and part of small alluvial islands in the most desalinated estuary. Big Potemkin Island stands out for its size. Floodplain islands and wetlands of the Dnieper form a unique natural ecosystem, known as the Dnieper plains, vaguely reminiscent of the tugs of Central Asia, since rainfall in the Dnieper delta is scarce and the delta supports almost exclusively the water of the river itself. The main sleeves are Konka (the longest), Bakai (the widest) and Rvach (the deepest), also Koshevaya, Litvinka and others. [2] .

Due to human activity in the 20th century, the water content of the delta decreased, especially for the arms of the second, third and more orders. But she is still interested in fishing enthusiasts of all time. In the X-XIII centuries in the Dnieper delta, the most important sea and river port of Kievan Rus - the city of Oleshye , which supplied the capital with fish, flourished. The modern cities of Kherson , Alyoshki , Golaya Pristan , and numerous villages are also located in the Dnieper delta.
