Content
History
Glasgow School of Art was founded in 1845 and was originally called the Glasgow State Design School ( Glasgow Gowernment School of Design ). The current school building was built in 1897 - 1909 in the Art Nouveau style, designed by the outstanding Scottish architect and modernist artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh .
In 2010, the School of Art was recognized as the best building in the UK over the past 175 years.
2014 Fire
The art school caught fire on May 23, 2014 at about 12:30 GMT, after a projection apparatus exploded in the basement. School staff were safely evacuated [2] . Fire brigades [3] from the whole city were pulled to the scene. By 5:00 p.m., the fire was localized, however, after that, the burning centers remained in the building. As a result of the incident, no one was hurt [4] . Firefighters did not allow the fire to destroy the structure and walls of the building, reporting the rescue of 90% of the building [5] and about 70% of the interior decoration and property [6] . The president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Stephen Hodder, called the fire “a worldwide tragedy.” [7]
Restoration
Soon after the fire, restoration work began. Restoration and reproduction of the Macintosh design, including the famous interior of the library, began in 2016 [8] . The process was carried out with historical certainty, including the use of original varieties of wood [9] . About 35 million pounds were collected for the restoration of the building, collected with the help of enthusiasts, including actors Brad Pitt and Peter Capaldi . The work was planned to be completed by the end of 2018, and in 2019 the Art School was supposed to move back to the main building [10] .
2018 Fire
On June 15, 2018 at 23:20 local time, a major fire occurred in the building under reconstruction. The cause is not established. The fire inflicted "severe damage" to the Macintosh educational building, affecting all floors, and spread to neighboring buildings, in particular, the O2 ABC night club was badly damaged. Residents of nearby houses were evacuated [11] . More than 120 employees of the fire service were involved in extinguishing the fire [12] . It was mainly localized by noon the next day, although firefighting was still underway in some small areas. At the time of the incident, there was no one in the building, no information was received on the victims [13] .
It was soon announced that since there is a risk of collapse, the building is planned to be partially dismantled and rebuilt again [14] . Corresponding work began in July 2018, and their costs will be covered by insurance [15] .
Curriculum
Glasgow School of Art currently studies painting, graphic arts, photography, sculpture, art history, and cinema, with approximately 1,600 students in 10 different departments.
