Biography

He was born on November 25 ( December 8 ), 1907, in the village of Zachepilovka (now Kharkiv Oblast , Ukraine ) into a peasant family. In 1941 he graduated from KSPI . Began to print in 1927. The first story, “Blue Blood”, was written within the walls of the Krasnograd Museum of Local Lore, in which he used a rich library. It was published in 1929. The first collection of Lviv Stories (Lviv Opovidannya) was published in 1948. He spent many years in newspaper work. In 1950–61 he was the editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian Literary Newspaper. He became famous for the historical novel "Daniil of Galitsky" (1951, translated into Russian in 1956). In it, the writer conveyed the spirit of a distant era, created an impressive image of Prince Danila , who confirmed the greatness of Galician Rus. He wrote the play “On the Great Land” (“On the Great Earth”, staged in 1949, published in 1951). He died in the fall of 1993 . He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery .

  • The Zachepilov collective farm established a prize named after brigade commander Yakov Zakharovich Pokus. The first prize was awarded to Anton Fedorovich Khizhnyak, and he transferred it to the Peace Foundation.
