Very ornamental shrub with spreading branches, especially during fruiting, with dense brushes of bright fruits. In culture, little is known.

In nature , the species range covers China and Korea . [2]

It grows on sandy mountain slopes and on river sands.

Botanical description

Shrub up to 1.5-2 m, with reddish-brown, shiny, grooved-knotty, densely leafy shoots .

Leaves are dense, leathery, narrow-lanceolate or linear-spatulate, 1.5-4 cm long, entire, sharp at both ends, bright green on both sides, with a rare network of veins. Spines are usually simple, short, no longer than 1 cm, rarely tripartite, sometimes completely absent.

Brushes 8-14- flowered , up to 4.5 cm long, pedicels up to 4.5 mm long. Flowers with a diameter of 6 mm, bright yellow; sepals on the reverse side bright red. Ovary with one ovule .

The berries are oblong-ovate, dark red, about 1 cm long.

Blossoms in May - June. Fruits in September - October.
