History

In the summer of 1911, hydrogeologist A. A. Kozyrev discovered iron ores located on the surface of the earth. But only in 1931, the Omsk Geological Exploration Party, under the leadership of I. G. Nikolaev, conducted exploratory drilling on a hill located west of the Bestobe Hill, which later became known as Karazhal.

Karazal from Kazakh is translated as “black mane”. Thus, a new, richest deposit of iron-manganese ores appeared on the map.

The working village of the Karazhal ore deposit in the Karaganda region began to form in the early 1930s . On July 31, 1949, the Directorate of the Atasu Mine was organized in the village of Atasu [5] . In 1950, the working village received the name "Karazhal." In 1955, the Atasurudstroy Trust was organized in Karazhal to develop the Atasuysky ore district , the iron ore base of the future Karaganda Metallurgical Plant , which was under construction at that time. In the same year, the Western Karazal quarry was commissioned [6] .

After the construction of the Atasu-Karazhal railway line, and the completion of the construction of the first stage of the Western Karazal and Big Ktai mines, as well as after the commissioning of the crushing and screening plant from the city-type working village of the same name, by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR dated January 8, 1963, the city of Karazhal was formed [6] .

June 30, 1971 in the Karazhal area - less than 90 km from the city (a little more than 30 km from the village of Shalginsky, now part of the Karazhal City Administration), a tragic event occurred: the catastrophe during the landing of the Soyuz-11 manned spacecraft , which caused the death of his crew - astronauts G. T. Dobrovolsky , V. N. Volkov and V. I. Patsaev [7] . On October 4, 1974, at the site of the tragic landing of the descent vehicle, the obelisk dedicated to the dead astronauts [8] was discovered, which was subsequently completely destroyed by vandals in the 2000s . In 2016, a new memorial was erected on the site of the old obelisk in honor of the dead crew of Soyuz-11 [9] :

In 1973, after the formation of the Dzhezkazgan region , the city of Karazhal became a part of it, in the same status as a city of regional subordination. In 1997, after the abolition of the Zhezkazgan region (the former Zhezkazgan, renamed in 1992), the city of Karazhal again returned to the Karaganda region.
