Leonardo began his career at the Internationale in 2005, spending the next several seasons on leases at Treviso and Pisa . In 2009 he moved to Bari . His technique, playing ability and defensive qualities allowed Bonucci to move to Turin , namely, to Juventus just a year later. After some time, Bonucci became one of the key players of the “old Signora”, organizing, according to many people, one of the most reliable defensive lines in recent years, together with Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli , having established himself as one of the best defenders of world football.

Club career

Leonardo Bonucci is a pupil of Viterbeze , a team from his hometown. In his youth, he played for a long time as an attacking and central midfielder , and sometimes as a center forward , but at the age of 17, on the advice of Viterbeze coach Carlo Perrone, he moved to the defense center [4] , where he found the perfect application for his high growth, physical strength , the ability to "read" the game, select the ball and start attacking the team with long and diagonal passes .

The International

In the summer of 2005, at the age of 18, he transferred to the International on a rental basis.

On May 14, 2006 he made his debut for Inter in the Italian Championship match with Cagliari , replacing Santiago Solari in the 90th minute [5] [6] . Inter bought the Bonucci contract at the end of the season [7] , but the next season he played in only three matches of the Italian Cup , replacing Walter Samuel and Fabio Grosso .

As part of Inter, Bonucci won the Italian Youth Cup 2005/06 and the Italian Youth Championship 2006/07.

Treviso and Pisa

In January 2007, Inter, wishing to acquire Robert Aquafresca , lost 50% of Bonucci's rights to Servis B Club Treviso .

On July 1, 2007, Bonucci officially became a Treviso player. Bonucci spent 1 season at Treviso, playing in 20 matches of Series B 2007/08. In June 2008, Inter bought the rights to Bonucci from Treviso for 700 thousand euros, but left the player in the club on loan already [8] .

Bonucci spent half of the 2008/09 season at Treviso, playing in 13 games, before being rented by the Pisa club, where he spent the second half of the 2008/09 season, playing 18 games [9] .

Genoa and Bari

On June 8, 2009, all rights to Bonucci were transferred to Genoa [10] . He became part of a deal to transfer from Genoa to Inter Tiago Motta and Diego Milito . Having not played a single game for the club, on July 2, 2009 Bonucci was sold to the Bari club, which bought half of the rights to a football player.

Bonucci made his debut for Bari in a match against Inter, which ended in a draw 1: 1. In Bari, Bonucci became a solid player in the starting lineup of the team. The duet in the center of defense with Andrea Ranocchia , who also belonged to Genoa, made Bari one of the most rarely missed teams in Serie A (after the first round, the club took 2nd place in this indicator). Only after the injury of Ranocchia did the effectiveness of the Bari defense decrease. The Russian club Rubin showed interest in both players, but the leadership of Bari refused to potential buyers [11] [12] .

On January 30, 2010, Bonucci scored his first goal for Bari, hitting the gates of Palermo . By the final rounds of Series A 2009/10, Genoa expressed a desire to buy back from Bari half of the rights he had previously sold to Bonucci, but in the end it was Bari who completely redeemed Bonucci's contract, paying Genoa 8 million euros [13] .

Juventus

On June 28, 2010 Bonucci signed a five-year contract with Turin Juventus , the transfer amount was 15.5 million euros [14] . The player received a t-shirt with the number "19".

He made his debut in official competitions on July 29 in the first match of the third qualifying round of the Europa League , in Ireland against the local Shamrock Rovers . On August 19, he scored a goal, as a result of which Juventus won the Austrian Sturm (1-2) in the playoffs of the Europa League [15] . September 18, Leonardo scored the first goal for Juve in Serie A, hitting the gates of Udinese [16] . In his first season as part of the “Bianconeri,” Bonucci made up the “core” of the club’s defense along with Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Bardzagli , most often playing between these two defenders at a 3-5-2 position or on the right in the center of defense at 4-3-3 . This trio received the unofficial name of the BBC , composed of the initials of the names of the defenders [17] .

In the 2011/12 season, a new coach was appointed to the team - Antonio Conte . It was expected that the team would finally go over to the scheme with two central defenders , as the new coach often used just such tactical schemes in his previous teams, because of which Bonucci was forced to leave the main squad and move to the bench, however, after several experiments with tactics Conte returned the circuit with three central defenders, allowing Bonucci to return to the starting lineup again [18] . Over the next several seasons, this trio has established itself as one of the best defensive lines in world football. [19] [20] [21] On April 2, 2012, Leonardo’s contract with the “old Signora” was renewed until June 30, 2017 [22] .

Bonucci as part of Juventus in 2014

The new season for Bonucci began with a victory in the Italian Super Cup . His debut in the Champions League took place in the group stage match against Chelsea . On October 2, 2012, in a Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Bonucci scored his first goal in the tournament and the second in European competition [23] . In December 2012, Bonucci was severely criticized for simulating in a match against Palermo [24] [25] .

On April 3, 2014, Bonucci scored a decisive goal in the Europa League quarterfinal match against Lyon , allowing Juventus to advance to the next round. [26]

On January 25, 2015, in a game against Chievo , Bonucci held his 200th match for Juventus. [27] On June 6, 2015, Bonucci entered the starting lineup of the Bianconeri in the 2014/15 Champions League final match against the Catalan Barcelona , but Juventus was defeated 3-1. [28] On November 24, 2015, Bonucci was nominated for inclusion in the UEFA Team of the Year. [29] On March 2, 2016, Leonardo first entered the field as a Bianconeri captain due to the absence of Gianluigi Buffon and Giorgio Chiellini , scoring a decisive goal in the Italian Cup match against Inter at San Siro , which allowed Juventus »To reach the finals, however, due to the yellow card received during the match, Bonucci was unable to take part in the final match, in which Juventus won and won the cup. [30] [31]

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Leonardo scored the ball in the match against Napoli , during the celebration of the scored ball, showing his hands the initials of his son, Matteo, who at that time was experiencing serious health problems. [32] [33] On November 27, Bonucci was injured in a match with Genoa , having been out of action for 60 days. [34] On December 19, 2016, Bonucci extended his contract with Juventus until 2021. [35] On January 5, 2017, Bonucci joined the UEFA Team of the Year. On February 17, Bonucci held his 300th match as part of the “Old Signora” [36] .

In total, Leonardo spent 319 matches for Juventus and scored 19 goals.

Milan

On July 14, 2017, Bonucci officially became a Milan player, signing a contract for a period of 5 years [37] [38] . The transfer amount was 40 million euros, plus 2 million euros in bonuses. Bonucci's salary at Milan was € 8 million per season, which allowed him to become the highest paid player in Italy, moving Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus striker (€ 7.5 million per year). Shortly after his presentation, Bonucci was also declared the new captain of Milan [39] [40] .

The first half of the season with Rossoneri was not very successful. Vincenzo Montella ’s team was in crisis, [41] Bonucci himself was used in a role incomprehensible to him; the defender began to lose confidence, which led to errors on the field [42] [43] .

The second half of the season, after Montella’s dismissal and the appointment of Gennaro Gattuso , was more successful for Bonucci [44] , due to the installation of a clear game model and the end of tactical experiments, as well as the choice of Alessio Romagnoli as the second defender in a pair with Bonucci [45] ] . On January 6, 2018, Leonardo scored his debut goal for AC Milan in the home game of the 20th round of Serie A against Crotone [46] . On March 31, 2018, Bonucci, ahead of Bardzagli and Chiellini in horse riding, scored a goal against his former team Juventus, interrupting a long-term series of dry matches against Bianconeri goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon [47] .

Return to Juventus

In the summer of 2018, Bonucci expressed a desire to return back to Turin and asked the new management of Milan for a transfer. On August 2, 2018, it was announced that Milan and Juventus had reached an agreement to directly exchange Bonucci for 24-year-old Bianconeri defender Mattia Caldara [48] . The transfer value of both players was estimated by the clubs at 35 million euros [49] . For the sake of returning to Juventus, Bonucci rejected the offers of Real Madrid , Manchester City and Manchester United [50] [51] , and also agreed to lower his salary from 8 to 5.5 million euros [52] . On October 20, 2018, for the first time since returning, he entered the field as the captain of Juventus [53] .

International Career

In February 2010, Bonucci was first called up to the Italian national team under the leadership of Marcello Lippi . March 3, 2010 he made his debut in the national team in a friendly game with Cameroon , which ended with the score 0-0 [54] . At the same time, he entered the starting lineup in the game, along with Fabio Cannavaro and Giorgio Chiellini, making up the line of defense of the team playing according to the 3-4-3 scheme [55] .

In May 2010, Bonucci got into the preliminary composition of the team preparing for the World Cup [56] [57] [58] . Bonucci scored his first goal with the national team on June 3, 2010 in a friendly match against the Mexican national team [59] . Leonardo went to the tournament, but never appeared on the field.

At Euro 2012 Bonucci played at the usual high level, playing 5 out of 6 matches, and playing an important role in his team reaching the final of the tournament, where Italy lost to Spain with a score of 0: 4.

On June 3, 2013, Cesare Prandelli included Leonardo in the national team for the 2013 Confederations Cup . On June 27, in a semifinal match against the Spanish national team held in Fortaleza , Bonucci failed to take his hit in the series after the penalty shootout, as a result of which the Italian national team lost [60] , but did not fly out of the tournament, having the opportunity to play in the match for third place with the national team of Uruguay . In this match, the Italians won a series of penalty shoot-outs with a total score of 3: 2, but Bonucci himself did not hit the penalty [61] .

Bonucci in the national team of Italy

Bonucci was called to the national team for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but appeared on the field only once.

On September 4, 2014, under the leadership of Antonio Conte, the new national team coach, Bonucci first tried on the captain's armband for the national team, replacing Daniele De Rossi in a match against the Netherlands [62] . On November 18, in a friendly match against the national team of Albania , Bonucci first appeared on the field as a captain from the very beginning of the match. [63]

May 31, 2016 Bonucci was called up to the national team to participate in Euro 2016 [64] . On June 13, Leonardo gave an assist to Emanuel Giaccherini , throwing the ball to him on the move, which allowed the player to score the first goal of the Italian team in the tournament. [65] In a quarter-final match with the German national team, Bonucci scored the ball in regular time, not having realized his kick in the penalty shoot-out, as a result, Germany advanced to the next round and Italy left the tournament. [66] Bonucci himself during the tournament several times recognized as a “player of the match”

In May 2018, he was announced the new captain of the Italian national team after Gianluigi Buffon ended his international career [67] .

Game Style

At the beginning of his career, Bonucci played as a midfielder, but subsequently the Italian was used as a central defender. [68] [69] [70] First of all, Leonardo is known for his technique and the art of transmission, thanks to which he can launch attacks of his teams from the depths. [68] [69] [71] A tall and strong defender with excellent field vision and reading skill. Bonucci is capable of delivering serious danger in the air, often scoring balls. [69] [72] [73] [74] [75] [76] Throughout his career, Bonucci has developed, rightfully recognized as one of the best defenders in the world. [68] [72] [73] [77] [78] [79] In addition to his playing qualities, Leonardo's leadership qualities and indestructible spirit are considered to be pluses. [69]

Personal life

In June 2011, Bonucci married his longtime girlfriend, Martina Maccari, a former model. [80] The couple has two sons: Lorenzo (born July 2012) [81] and Matteo (born May 2014). [82] [83] [84]

His eldest son, Lorenzo, is a Torino fan, while his father played for Juventus for 7 years, and these clubs are irreconcilable rivals (see Turin Derby ) [85] . In July 2016, the youngest son of Bonucci, Matteo, underwent emergency surgery after an exacerbation of a serious illness. In an interview, Bonucci admitted that due to his son’s illness, he thought about leaving football:

“For three or four months I was just not my own, I was just not interested in what was around, I was thinking only about my son. I always hated hospitals and tried to avoid them, but at that time I had to be there, and I really tried to be calm. Matteo is much better now, and our family is more united than ever. Yes, I thought about leaving football; at that moment he was not my priority. Priorities vary depending on the situation, but at that moment we were just lucky ” [86]

Bonucci's older brother, Riccardo, was also a footballer who also played as a central defender. [87] Bonucci's father owns a paint shop in Viterbo .

In May 2012, during mass investigations in Serie A, Bonucci, along with Juventus teammate Simone Pepe and coach Antonio Conte, as well as many other players, were accused of participating in match-fixing; Bonucci was accused of being involved in a conspiracy regarding a match against Udinese in May 2010, which ended with a score of 3-3, while demanding that the player be suspended from football matches for three and a half years. Bonucci denied any violations on his part, [88] [89] and was acquitted in August of that year. [90]

In October 2012, Bonucci and his family, namely his wife and five-month-old son, were confronted by armed robbers who intended to take his wristwatch from the defender. When the burglar tried to remove the watch from Bonucci’s hand, he reportedly hit the burglar and subsequently pursued him all over the street, but he managed to hide on a motorcycle with his accomplice.
