Kinnor

Kinnor is a Hebrew string musical instrument. The Torah mentions two musical instruments Kinnor (כינור) and Nevel (נבל). It is known about Nevel that it is a harp , and nothing is known about Kinnor, except that it had strings. In this regard, the translations were substituted for a variety of meanings, often it was also called a harp.

In Russian biblical translations, Kinnor is referred to in different ways, sometimes as “ harp ”, sometimes as “harp” [1] [2] [3] [4] . This is the very first tool mentioned in the Bible, already in the book of Genesis . The invention of stringed instruments is attributed to the son of a descendant of Cain, Iuval :

"The name of his brother was Jubal: he was the father of all playing the harp and pipe.
( Genesis 4:21 )
"

At Kinnor, ancient Jews accompanied the performance of psalms and hymns. Young David entertained the game of King Saul [5] : “And when the spirit from God was on Saul, then David, taking the harp, played, and Saul became more pleasant and better, and the evil spirit departed from him.” ( 1 Sam. 16:23 ) The same instrument is mentioned in the song of the exiles - “On the willows, in the midst of it, we hung our harps.” ( Psalm 136: 2 ).

There is no general opinion about the form of the instrument. Perhaps he was not a very large triangular harp , or was closer to the lyre , or to kiphar . Most likely, during the game he was held under the armpit, extracting sound with a plectrum or simply with his fingers. The sound, most likely, was quiet, alto range. [3]

In modern Hebrew, the word Kinnor means violin .
