Martin Heinrich Ratke ( German: Martin Heinrich Rathke ; August 25, 1793 , Danzig - September 3, 1860 , Koenigsberg ) - German anatomist and embryologist .
Ratke was born in the city of Danzig . In 1814, he first moved to Göttingen to study medicine , and in 1817 to the German capital , Berlin , where he received a doctorate in medicine for his thesis " De salamandiarum corporibus adiposis ovariis et oviductibus eorumque evolutione " (Berlin, 1818 ).
Then Ratke returned to Danzig, where he practiced medicine. In 1825 he was appointed senior physician at a local hospital , in 1826, a district physicist . Four years was a teacher of physics and physical geography at the gymnasium . Since that time, he devoted himself to studying the anatomy and embryology of animals and published a number of works on these subjects, for which he was invited in 1829 to the post of professor of physiology and general pathology at the Imperial University of Dorpat .
Along the way, he also read zoology and comparative anatomy there. Together with Kutorga and Kappgerr in 1832 and 1835 . he traveled to the Crimea and the Black Sea to study the fauna of the latter. In 1835 he moved to Konigsberg to the place of K. Baer , then appointed academician to St. Petersburg ; there he occupied two departments: zoology and anatomy. In 1839 he traveled to Norway and Sweden . In 1859 he transferred zoological collections to a special new building (K. anatomische Austalt); many of them are collected by Ratke himself.
He died in 1860 in Konigsberg.
