At 2 o'clock on June 22, 1941, the alarm was raised and the defensive structures were occupied. In the first hours of the beginning of the war, he was crushed (nevertheless, not everywhere, so the 4th commandant's office, the 15th frontier post and the Virbalis checkpoint, hiding in the buildings, fought until the evening of June 22, 1941, it turned out to be only 5 border guards) and apparently retreated to the Red Army divisions.
Departing from the border, the remnants of the detachment proceeded to the protection of the rear of the 8th Army . During July 1941, border guards defeated three sabotage groups totaling more than 200 people in forest areas near Lake Peipsi , eliminated the airborne troops thrown into the rear of the 8th army and had the task of cutting the Tallinn - Leningrad highway.
September 1, 1941 disbanded.
From the memoirs of the warrior of the detachment [1] :
“Almost no one left from my Taurage border detachment. No matter how much I looked for my colleagues, I found only two: the head of the 106th detachment of Colonel Golovkin Leonty Afanasyevich and the deputy for political affairs of the commandant of the 4th Kybartai border commandant's office Yefim Nekhaev, who visited me in 1949. He was a complete invalid, poorly seeing and poorly moving from his injuries while defending the city of Kybartai. Despite the fact that he no longer served in the frontier troops for many years, he came to me in a green frontier cap ... I never met anyone again. ”
