The American Philosophical Society ( English American Philosophical Society ) - the oldest organization that unites American intellectuals. Unlike the American Philosophical Association , it unites not so much professional philosophers as intellectuals as such. Being elected as a member of society is a recognition of outstanding achievements in any field of science or practice.

Since its foundation, the Society has been located in Philadelphia. Currently, the Philosophical Hall has been turned into a museum. It is located in the National Historical Park of Independence.
Content
Society History
The society was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743 , with the aim of promoting "any philosophical experiments that shed light on the nature of things, strengthen man's power over matter and increase the convenience and enjoyment of life." He became his first president. Other founders included James Alexander (lawyer), Francis Hopkinson, Philip Singh Jr. and other prominent people of his time. It was founded two years after the founding of the University of Pennsylvania, with which it remains closely associated.
By 1746, society ceased to exist. However, it was revived in 1767, and on January 2, 1769, it merged with the American Society for the Promotion of Good Knowledge.
Society attracted the best minds of America. His second president was Thomas Jefferson. [1] Among its members were George Washington , John Adams .
In the 20th century, more than 200 members were Nobel laureates [1] .
Foreign Members of the Society
From the very beginning, the Society was aimed at interacting with colleagues from other countries. Foreign members of the society were T. Kosciuszko , M.-J. Lafayette , A. von Humboldt , Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben .
The foreign members were E. R. Dashkova - from 1789, which became the first woman elected to society [2] .
Current State
In 2016, the society had 1025 members, including 858 US citizens and 167 foreign members from more than twenty countries [1] . In total, by this time, more than 5.5 thousand people had been elected members of the society since their foundation [1] .
The society has the reputation of an elite club, has a huge library and archive (80 thousand volumes of books and 5.5 million manuscripts on the history of science), as well as material resources donated. With 25 funds totaling $ 16 million, it spends about $ 300,000 per year on grants and scholarships. [3]
The society promotes scientific work and the device of young and beginner scientists through grants and scholarships.
The following special subsidies are allocated [4] :
- Daland scholarships for research in clinical medicine,
- Miko grants for works on forest botany,
- Phillips grants to study American aborigines,
- Henry M. Phillips grants for fellows in jurisprudence
- Clark Slater scholarships on research in the medical sciences of the XX century.
