Biography

Gizelbert's date of birth is unknown, presumably he was born in the year 1007 . In the first documents of Gieselbert, he is called "Gieselbert de Longwy" (probably, after the name of the Luxembourg city of Longwy). The documents were mainly directed against the looting of the Archdiocese of Trier . For example, he and his brother Dietrich are mentioned in a document dated November 12, 1036 , where the presence of their uncle Adalbert , the archbishop of Trier , is also mentioned.

In 1036, Gizelbert appropriated territory in the north, and in the same year some sources mention him as Count Salm and de Longwy . These titles he could acquire through marriage [1] . Thus, Gizelbert gave rise to a dynasty, which later received the name Salm . Representatives of this kind exist to this day.

Gizelbert became the Count of Luxembourg after the death of his childless brother Henry II in 1047, who inherited his uncle Henry I , who also did not leave heirs, in 1026 . Gizelberth's other brother, Friedrich , became the duke of Lower Lorraine and the vogt of Malmedy , and another, Adalberon , became bishop of Metz .

In 1050, Gieselbert is mentioned as governor of Echternach . In the summer of 1056, Gieselbert appropriated his income from the abbeys of St. Maximinus and St. Willibrod in Echternach, where he was a vogt . He also argued with the Archbishop of Trier Poppon about the abbey of St. Maximinus, which belonged to the brother of Gizelbert, Bishop Metz Adalberon III [2] . The last mention of Gizelbert refers to the imperial edict dated 1056 , where new governors were assigned duties.

Gizelbert was assassinated on August 14, 1059, during an uprising in Italy [1] .

Gizelbert divided his possessions between two sons. His eldest son, Conrad I , became the count of Luxembourg, while the other son, Hermann I , became the count of Salm; he was also known as the anti-king of Germany .
