Island of the Dead (novel)

"The Isle of the Dead" ( Eng. Isle of the Dead ) - a novel by the American writer Roger Zelazny , published in 1969 . Nominated in 1969 for the Neboul Award for the best novel [1] , in 1972 he received the French Apollo Award [2] .

The title of the novel refers to the eponymous painting by the Swiss painter Arnold Becklin . The main character, Frank Sandau, is also present in the novel “ To Die in Italbar ” as a minor character, thus combining these two novels in a small cycle.

Content

Story

The protagonist is a multi-billionaire and peaceformist Frank Sandow ( Francis Sandow ), an earthling born in the 20th century. Recently photos of his close friends and enemies who died hundreds of years ago began to come to him. Also stole his former sweetheart Ruth. All this made the sworn enemy of Frank Green-Green, the existence of which Frank learned only the day before. He demands that Frank arrive on the Isle of Dead on the planet of Illyria, where they must fight. However, the duel with Green Green did not take place due to the fact that one of Frank's animated enemies, Mike Shendon, almost killed Green Green himself. So Green-Green unexpectedly went over to the side of Frank Sandau, his former adversary. Frank managed to kill Shendon, but in the course of the battle both his lively friends and Green-Green were destroyed.

Description of the future in the novel

Far future. 32nd century. People mastered other planets, made a technological breakthrough, there are robots and aliens everywhere.

Prostitution has been legalized, and the main character, a billionaire, has even concluded long-term contracts with one of them (Liza). It became possible resurrection of people. After the death of a person, the samples of his tissues remain on the Earth (to restore the body) and the “reproducing tape” (it contains all the thoughts and experiences of the deceased — to restore the memory and personality). However, the resurrection of people almost never practiced.

It became quite possible to create artificial planets. Moreover, it is quite possible for special people, the world-formists, to allow it, and at the same time, the entire living world on this planet will obey the owner’s mental commands. Virtually no wars and espionage.
