Biography
Member of World War II . [1] After a shrapnel wound, they wanted to amputate his leg, but he persuaded front-line surgeons not to do this. After the war he underwent ten operations, after which one leg became a little shorter. In his first season, he scored 14 goals. [2] Having played more than 150 official matches for Odessa clubs (about 30 goals scored). In the late 50s, Cherkassky switched to coaching, where he excelled no less than in the green fields. Matvey Leontyevich was a member of the coaching staff of Vanguard (Yellow Waters), Lokomotiv (Vinnitsa), Dnipro (Dnepropetrovsk) , headed Odessa SKA and Kherson Lokomotiv.
For fourteen years, Cherkassky worked as an assistant to the head coach of Chernomorets . For a long time he was the head teacher of the Sports School “Chernomorets”. Hundreds of Matvey Leontyevich's pupils have played and continue to play in professional football clubs. [3] Since 1992, lives in New York (USA), where he trains young athletes at the Chernomorets football school.
On September 13, 2014, four new name plates were opened on the Walk of Fame of FC Chernomorets (Odessa) , one of which is dedicated to Matvey Cherkassky [4] .
