Modem profile

Modem profile - a set of modem settings (configuration) used for its optimal functioning for various purposes, under various conditions: with a different state of the telephone line, frequency response of the line , noise, the presence of frequent spark noise, etc.

Standard configuration

As a rule, there are several profiles - one stores the factory settings, the rest stores the configurations recorded by the user. As the main (working), the current profile is used , which can be written:

  • default profile values , aimed at maximum stability and reliability (“slowly but surely”), factory settings are usually written. It is executed by executing the AT command AT & F0 & W ,
  • user profile values (triggered by the AT & F1 & W command). Unlike the first modem profile, the second profile is usually aimed at maximum performance , sometimes at the expense of reliable connections (the connection may break off spontaneously).

Some modems, due to the ability to use several profiles, use the digit at the end of the & W AT-command, which determines the number of a specific configuration: & W0 (, & W1 , ...) (as an option: & W1 , & W2 , ...).

By further debugging the current profile, it is possible to obtain the optimal reliability / speed ratio. In modems that have two current profiles, you can switch between them, for example, in a laptop used both at home and at work.

Profile values are stored in read-only memory and are accessible by entering control commands from the console [1] :

AT & VnView settings in profile n [2]
AT & WnWriting settings to profile n
AT & ZnReset and load settings from profile n

Remote Configuration

Some modems allow changing the profile of the modem connected remotely [3] . In this case, the remote configuration is carried out by the profile configuration in batch mode. When the modem is in on-line mode, the current configuration of the remote modem or one of its profiles can be read into one of the local user profiles of the modem. Then this profile changes locally and during this time the line can be disconnected.

Remote profile reading and writing is performed by * Rab and * Wab commands and works only on-line. The connection speed and mode do not matter. The remote modem must be installed to receive the remote configuration by executing the AT * F1 command (the AT * F0 command will set the modem to the mode of rejecting remote configuration requests). Since the modem uses a remote digital loopback mode to request information about a remote configuration in order to accept a remote configuration request, a remote digital loop request ( AT & T4 command) must also be provided on the remote modem.

Remote mode batch mode is a convenient feature that allows you to pre-configure the remote modem by sending it one of the local user profiles of the modem at a time. This is especially useful when there are many remote modems and a set of standard configurations available in user profiles of a locally connected modem. It is only necessary once to configure the remote modem of one of the standard configurations, activating the corresponding remote configuration.

The local profile is modified by loading this profile as active settings, then changing them and saving the active settings back to the profile. Then, when the connection is restored, the configuration is transferred to the remote modem. Reading remote profile b into local profile a is done with the command:

  AT * Rab
a = 0 ... 3The local user profile with the corresponding number.
b = 0 ... 3Remote user profile with the corresponding number.
b = 4Remote active configuration.
b = 5Factory default remote configuration

After the remote modem returns to the on-line state, the local modem can upload (write) its profiles to the profile of the remote modem and the remote modem will reboot with the new profile. This is done by the command:

  AT * Wab
a = 0 ... 3The local user profile with the corresponding number.
a = 4Local active configuration.
a = 5Local factory default configuration.
b = 0 ... 3Remote user profile with the corresponding number.
