Bataan ( Tagalog. Bataan ) - the province of the Philippines , occupies the entire peninsula of the same name on the island of Luzon , Philippines. It is part of the Central Luzon region. The administrative center is the city of Balanga .

Geography
The area of the province is 1373.0 km². In the north it borders with the provinces of Sambales and Pampanga . In the west it is washed by the South China Sea , in the northwest - Subic Bay and in the east - Manila Bay . The Bataan Peninsula separates the Gulf of Manila from the South China Sea and is a continuation of the Sambales mountains. In the north of the peninsula is Mount Natib (1253 m), and in the bga - the Mariveles Range.
History
During World War II, Bataan was defended by troops of the United States and the Philippines under the leadership of General Douglas MacArthur from the Japanese forces from January 1 to April 4, 1942 . MacArthur was evacuated, but 6-11 thousand prisoners of war allies died in the " Bataan death march ."
