Carpenter was one of the best Welsh pool players of his time. In the 1920s and 1930s, he successfully played against players such as Joe Davis or Tom Newman . In 1922, he defeated Davis in an English billiards match with a score of 7000-1.
Tom Carpenter was the champion of Wales in English billiards and a semifinalist of the world championship in this game in 1928 [2] . In 1927 , at the first world championship in snooker, Carpenter reached the semifinals, where he lost to Tom Dennis with a score of 10:12 [3] .
Carpenter was the owner of two large billiard clubs in Cardiff , one of which totaled 15 tables, and precisely because of his position there he was forced to refuse to participate in professional competitions in 1935. Six years later, in 1941 during the bombing of the city by German troops his largest club was destroyed, and Tom lost his business. He later moved to Somerset , where he continued to play billiards at local amateur tournaments.
