Creation
The idea of Classic Rock was born from the ex-deputy chief editor of Metal Hammer magazine Jerry Ewing (later editor of Classic Rock ), along with his fellow journalist Dave Ling and art editor Andy Ryan Ryan ) from Dennis Publishing . They came up with a one-time title dedicated to classical rock, because they felt that with this name and theme the magazine would attract a large audience. In 1998, Dennis Publishing approved the first pilot release of Classic Rock , featuring material about Guns N 'Roses , including an article by journalist Mick Wall , who became a famous person when Axl Rose abused him on the track “Get in the Ring” with Use Your Illusion II album (the line “not doing as I was told” was dedicated to him). The circulation sold better than expected, and the printing of the magazine was continued. Wall is one of six authors, along with Ewing and Ling, who participated in that publication, and they still write for the magazine. The magazine initially attracted a certain niche audience, but sales grew as Classic Rock published material about bands such as Black Sabbath , Iron Maiden and Aerosmith , which also appeared on its cover in its first year of publication. Classic Rock attracted those who considered major music publications, such as Q and New Musical Express , callous and too focused on opening the “next big thing”. In addition, pop groups dominated the charts at that time, and record companies did not seem to risk spending money on groups that wrote their own material. In the wake of the growing popularity, Classic Rock soon became a regular publication and now publishes 13 issues a year.
In early April 2013, it announced the sale of the magazine along with Metal Hammer for £ 10.2 million (approximately $ 15.44 million) of the new TeamRock , founded by GMG Radio's former CEO John Myers. TeamRock specializes in releasing and distributing various content targeted at rock fans. The deal included full rights to both magazines and their supplements, as well as rights to hold Golden Gods and Classic Rock Roll Of Honor ceremonies . As a reason for selling magazines, Mark Wood, head of Future Publishing, pointed out that "Classic Rock and Metal Hammer are extremely successful and streamlined parts of Future, but they were not priorities in our growth strategy." The acquisition of magazines was funded by Harwood Private Equity, which provided TeamRock funds for the “ongoing development” of the business [1] .
Key Groups
The magazine focuses on groups founded since the 1960s. Indeed, many of the musicians who appeared on the cover of the magazine are no longer alive ( Jimi Hendricks and Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy appeared on the front covers of the magazine, as well as bands with deceased members such as Queen and The Who ). Among the bands that have appeared on the cover 3 or more times today are Queen , Guns N 'Roses , Deep Purple, Black Sabbath / Ozzy Osbourne , Bon Jovi , Iron Maiden , Aerosmith , Led Zeppelin ( Jimmy Page was on the cover alone 3 times), Metallica , Thin Lizzy , Pink Floyd , Jimi Hendricks , Genesis , AC / DC , and Mötley Crüe . Among the relatively young bands that appeared on the cover were The Darkness and Velvet Revolver , which appeared on it twice. Despite the dominant nature of the bands, which indisputably fall into the category of classical rock, the magazine also includes heavy metal , prog rock , blues and grunge bands. Recent releases featured articles on the thrash metal band Slayer , as well as on diverse groups such as Porcupine Tree , Buckcherry and Rodrigo y Gabriela. Monthly reviews of metal and progressive rock albums are a feature of the magazine.
Modern groups
Classic Rock considers any releases that are closely classified as rock, including albums, DVDs, concerts, and books. This includes the annual award for the best new band. Bands such as Rose Hill Drive, Muse , DragonForce , Wolfmother, and The Answer have all appeared on the pages of the magazine recently.
100 Greatest British Rock Albums
For the 91st issue (April, 2006), the magazine presented a list of “100 Greatest British Rock Albums,” voted by Classic Rock editors and various rock-related people (including Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple , members of Black Sabbath , Lemmy of Motörhead and Francis Rossi of Status Quo ). The magazine decided to qualify AC / DC as a British team, although the group was formed in Australia. Both the band's vocalists ( Bon Scott and Brian Johnson ) and guitarists Angus and Malcolm Yangi are of British descent. Led Zeppelin with the album " Led Zeppelin IV " took first place.
100th Edition
The 100th issue contains all the regular columns and headings, except for one article in which 100 famous rock musicians were asked to write part of an article about whom they consider to be an “icon of rock”. Among the authors were: Brian May , Lemmy (who awarded this title to Tina Turner , who in turn wrote about Ian Camfield), Ian Gillan , Gary Moore , Angus Young , Phil Collins , Sebastian Bach , Peter Frampton , Jerry Cantrell , Chris Cornell , Paul Rogers , Chad Smith , Jack Black , Zakk Wilde and Matthew Bellamy .
Special Editions
In 2006, Classic Rock, in collaboration with Metall Hammer, also issued special editions of the heavy rock and metal bands of the 70s (Issue I), 80s (Issue II), and 90s (Issue III). In 2007, there were also three special issues dedicated to one genre of rock music: blues rock (Issue I), progressive rock (Issue II, which became a separate monthly magazine because of its popularity, is called “Prog Rock”) Heavy Metal (Issue III). Each included a bonus DVD . The 2007 special collector's edition was titled “High Voltage,” featuring stories from Mick Wall, featuring photos of Ross Halfin , Jimmy Page , Ozzy Osbourne , Axl Rose, and others.
Recently (2010) Classic Rock collaborated with Road Runner Record UK to release Classic Rock Presents : containing the album “ Slash ”. It is believed that the magazine was the first to reach the pinnacle of the online album charts, the Fan Pack release gives European fans Slash 's debut solo album, one month before the standard issue of Slash magazine is released. The partnership of brands for the first time, released a well-known album exclusively with the publishing house of the magazine, on the eve of the general release of the album.
Russian edition
In Russia, the magazine has been published by Bright Media Publishing House since 2001, and the content of the British and Russian issues was different. But typical sections for each issue were brief news reviews (The New Rock Times), articles about recording songs (The Story of a Song), blitz interviews with musicians (Q & A, Heavy Burden), memoirs rock stars about their colleagues (“Once Hendrix and I”), reviews of albums (“Hard Stuff '), reviews of back catalogs of various rock artists and publishers (“ Classical Collection ”), announcements and concert reports (“ Radar ").
Also in 2007-2009. Special issues dedicated to the decades of rock (70s, 80s, 90s) were published in Russian. In addition, in 2010, the editors of the Russian Classic Rock independently issued a special issue dedicated to rock music of the 60s.
In the fall of 2016, the release of the Russian edition was suspended indefinitely due to financial difficulties. [2] A total of 143 issues were issued over a fifteen-year period.
