Kuressaare Airport ( IATA : URE , ICAO : EEKE ) is an airport in Estonia . Located 3 km from the city of Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa . The first runway was built in the second half of the 1930s. The airport was officially opened on March 6, 1945. Over the following years, airflow increased, and between 1949 and 1953, between 10 and 14 daily flights operated between Kuressaare and Tallinn at the airport. During this period, about 400 passengers flew in or out of Kuressaare every day. Until 1958, the airport was not electrified. The current terminal building was built in 1962 . The second runway 05/23 was built in 1976 , and in 1999 the main runway was increased. The terminal building was renovated in 2007. The owner of the airport is Tallinn Airport JSC. In 2009, the passenger traffic of the airport amounted to 19 519 people.

In the period from August 1945 to July 1957, the 283rd Fighter Aviation Vyborg Order of Kutuzov Regiment was based at the airfield on the Yak-9, MiG-15 and MiG-17 planes from the 275th Pushkin Red Banner Fighter Aviation Division .
