Administrative Division
The department was divided into 2 sections: Shurakhansky and Chimbaysky . There were 7 volosts in the Shurakhansky district: Shurakhanskaya, Turtkulskaya, Sarybyskaya, Sheikhabbas-Valiyskaya, Biybazarskaya, Minbulaki, Tamdynskaya. There were 12 volosts in the Chimbay section of the volosts: Nukus, Chimbay, Kegel, Kokuzyak, Beszhab, Naupyr, Ishim, Daukar, Kokkul, Taldyks, Kungradskaya, Zhanabazarskaya [1] .
History
The Amu Darya department was formed in 1873 on the lands that departed to Russia from the Khiva khanate . In 1887 it was included in the Syr Darya region.
In October 1920, it was transformed into the Amu Darya region of the Turkestan ASSR .
Population
According to the census of 1897, 194.5 thousand people lived in the department. Including Karakalpaks - 47.9%; Kazakhs - 24.2%; Uzbeks - 17.7%; other Turks - 7.1%; Russians - 1.6%. In the city of Petro-Alexandrovsk, 3111 people lived. [2]
