The river is mentioned in the official chronicle of the Chinese Sui dynasty - Sui-shi . “The Secret Legend of the Mongols ” ( 1240 ) often mentions the “ black forest on the Tuul River ”, in which the palace of Van Khan was located and which eventually went to Genghis Khan . The river is called Khatun- Tuul, that is, Queen of Tola .
The source of the river is located in the Khentei mountains, in the Khan-Khenteyn-Nuruu nature reserve. Tuul flows through the southern part of Ulan Bator and flows into Orkhon , which, in turn, flows into the Selenga , ending in Baikal .
The river is covered with ice from mid-November to mid-April. On the banks of the river are numerous willows; many species of fish live in the river, including taimen.
Currently, the river suffers from pollution caused by wastewater treatment plants of Ulan Bator , gold mining enterprises located on the river, as well as nomads settling near the river.
