Story
The action takes place in New York at the beginning of the 20th century. Three gamblers , Nicely-Nicely Johnson , Benny Southstreet and Charlie Rusty discuss tomorrow's races and argue which horse has the best chance of winning. Members of the local organization “Mission for the Salvation of Souls”, similar to the Salvation Army (their hierarchy resembles an army) pass by. The leader of the organization is attractive sergeant Sarah Brown, who preaches passers-by with a hot sermon, urging them to stop drinking, lying, and especially gambling, and inviting the Mission to the meeting next Sunday. The sermon does not attract attention, and the missionaries sadly retire.
Nysley and Benny meet Harry, nicknamed the Horse, who wants to know where the dice are played . The games are organized by Nisley and Benny's employer, Nathan Detroit. All three collide with Lieutenant Brannigan ( Eng. Lt. Brannigan ), but Nathan Detroit arrives and deftly gets rid of Brannigan. Nathan complains to his assistants that there are a lot of big players in the city, so you need to find a good place where you could play dice, but due to Brannigan’s excessive activity, only one suitable place was found - a garage in the Baltimore hotel. However, the owner of the garage requires a security deposit of $ 1000, and Nathan does not have such an amount.
Nysley suggests trying his luck at Sky Masterson , who is ready to bet on almost anything. Nathan knows that Sky will not give him money, but he will be ready to make any bet on this amount. Nathan is trying to come up with a bet that he cannot lose. His fiancee, Miss Adelaide, appears and presents a gift - a belt for the fourteen-year anniversary of their prolonged engagement. The fact that Adelaide and Nathan can’t get married in any way caused Adelaide to get a cold due to a nervous breakdown.
Meanwhile, Sky Masterson is going to Cuba . He boasts to Nathan that he can take with him any woman he wants. Then Nathan offers a bet: Sky will persuade any woman to choose Nathan to go with him to Cuba. Sky agrees, and Nathan then selects Sarah Brown from the Soul Mission.
