Biography
Sanchez Munoz was a close friend and adviser to the Avignon Pope Benedict XIII . In 1396, he was sent to Valencia to persuade the local bishop to submit to Avignon . The day before his death, Benedict called on four loyal cardinals and asked them to elect a new pope in order to maintain the continuity of the Avignon line. On June 10, three of the four cardinals elected Pope Munoz, who took the name Clement VIII. The fourth cardinal, Jean Carrier, who was absent from the conclave , declared his disagreement with the election results and was excommunicated by Clement from the church and arrested. Clement's papacy was recognized only in Aragon , since Alfonso V needed a “court” pope to put pressure on Rome in resolving the Neapolitan issue. In the summer of 1423, Alfonso even convinced the citizens of Siena to recognize Clement, wanting to disrupt the cathedral organized by Martin V, which was soon to be held in Pavia , located on the territory of the Siena Republic. However, by 1428, the political need for a “court” pope had disappeared, and Alfonso sent a delegation to Clement urging him to abdicate and completely abandon his claim to the throne and recognize Martin V. On July 26, 1429, Clement sent Martin his abdication. He forgave the repentant antipope and even gave him a diocese in the city of Palma in Mallorca . There Clement died on December 28, 1446.
