He studied at the MGIMO and the Karl Marx University of Economics in Budapest . In 1978–82 he was ambassador of the People's Republic of Hungary to the USSR. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party , belonged to the reformist wing. Since 1985 - Member of the Hungarian Parliament ; in March 1989, became his speaker. October 23, proclaimed Hungary a republic, and on the same day took the post of acting president. He resigned on May 2, 1990 .
Consistently consisted of the Hungarian Workers Party and its successor, the HSWP . In 1989-2002 he was a member of the Hungarian Socialist Party and was constantly re-elected. In 2003–05, he was chairman of a small Social Democratic Party ( en ).
