The Miracle on Ice 1980 and 2011

In the press, this victory of 2011 was also called the β€œMiracle on Ice” [7] [8] , by analogy [9] with the famous name of the victory of the US team during the 1980 Olympic Games . At the same time, a number of details regarding the performance of the Russian youth team at this World Cup turned out to be similar to the performance of the US team: [10] :

  1. Before the start of the competition, the chances of each team (Russia-2011 and USA-1980) were rated as low.
  2. Teams lost their first matches with future finalists of the tournament (the Americans 3 days before the games lost the USSR national team 3:10 in the control match).
  3. In the group stage of the tournament, both teams defeated the Norwegians and Czechs, but missed Sweden ahead.
  4. In the final stage of the tournament, both teams beat Finland and their main opponent (Russians - Canadians, Americans - Russians). In 1980, Sweden also reached the final part of the tournament, but the United States did not play with it anymore, because according to the rules, the result of the meeting in the group stage was also counted for the final (round) part.
  5. The teams won a strong-willed victory over Finland, losing after the second period 1: 2, having scored three goals after that.
  6. In the match with Sweden, the teams managed to equalize at the very end of the game. In 1980, the match ended in a draw, since there were no overtime and shootouts then.
  7. In the third period, both teams were able to turn the tide of the meeting, winning this period without goals conceded and thanks to the goal of the team captain.
